The search is over. General manager Ken Holland and the Edmonton Oilers announced Tuesday morning that they have hired Dave Tippett as their new head coach.
“I’m delighted to be here, I’m thankful for the opportunity,” Tippett said. “I’m well rested. I’ve been out for a couple of years, and it’s time to get going.”
The 57-year-old, who hails from Moosomin, Sask., began his NHL head coaching career with the Los Angeles Kings in 1999 before lengthy stays with the Dallas Stars and Phoenix and Arizona Coyotes.
Tippett said he knows Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid from the hockey world cup. He’s watched video of McDavid and Leon Draisaitl playing together and likes what he sees but says he won’t be stuck on that idea heading into training camp.
