Concrete is a major source of carbon emissions in data center construction. Meta’s holistic approach to reducing this carbon impact starts with designing to minimize volumes and/or substitute with greener materials.
Further, low-carbon concrete has to meet multiple performance criteria including strength, curing speed, cost, and carbon intensity. This is a difficult problem and we are developing a process to adopt low-carbon concrete by leveraging our open-sourced AI. Following at-scale applications in pilots, we introduced performance-based requirements to limit the carbon intensity of specific concrete applications, and will leverage AI to apply further limits to more mission-critical applications (floor-slabs, foundations).
OCP can help scale the use of green concrete by developing best practices and examples, accelerating learning and industry adoption, collaborating with designers, constructors, engineers to build AI-based optimizations for data centers.
