A starfish egg cell eliminates centrioles – structures that play a crucial role in cell division. It expels its two 'indestructible' mother centrioles (green). One daughter centriole (purple) is also ejected, leaving the other daughter centriole alone in the egg cell, where it is unstable and can be eliminated. This is the first time the whole process has been recorded in real time. Credit: EMBL/Joana Borrego-Pinto. Read more: news.embl.de/science/1603-centrioles.
