The mound located at the base of the fifth digit (little finger).
It is on the medial side of the hand.
It is made up of 4 muscles.
They are intrinsic muscles of the hand because they arise and insert in the hand.
They contract and create specific movements of the little finger.
• abductor digiti minimi: A hypothenar muscle.
• flexor digiti minimi brevis: A hypothenar muscle.
• opponens digiti minimi: A hypothenar muscle.
• palmaris brevis: Cupping the skin of the palm. Missing in some individuals. Not belong to the hypothenar muscles.
(Blood supply)
• superficial palmar arterial arch, that originates from the ulnar artery
(Lymphatic drainage)
1. cubital lymph nodes (in the cubital fossa)
2. axillary lymph nodes
3. right lymphatic duct (right hypothenar eminence) or thoracic duct (left hypothenar eminence)
(Innervation)
• ulnar nerve (spinal roots: C8, T1): Travels in the Guyon canal (formed between the hook of the hamate and the pisiform), continues superficially to the transverse carpal ligament but under the palmaris brevis, that protects this nerve.
(Comparison)
• thenar eminence: Functions primarily to control the thumb.
• hypothenar eminence: Creates specific movements of the little finger.
