Steamfitters Local Union 638 is teaching New York City’s inner city youth the Steamfitting trade, constructing, maintaining and repairing life-saving fire suppression systems, sprinklers, high-pressure natural gas, steam water and waste lines, HVAC and refrigeration systems in New York’s thousands of high-occupancy buildings. Recent apprentices have been employed on major NYC projects including the Freedom Tower, Madison Square Garden and the MTA/New York City subway.

Numerous union steamfitter apprentices from diverse communities across all five boroughs have entered the Local 638 apprenticeship program through Construction Skills, an initiative that works with companies of the Mechanical Contractors Association to open doors to long-term career opportunities in the building and construction trades. In addition to schooling and training, steamfitter apprentices earn fair wages and benefits that enable them to provide for their families, while living and working in New York City.
