On New Year's Day 1888, an infamous event that set the wheels in motion to end the Hatfield-McCoy Feud took place. It is now known as the "New Year's Day Massacre" for its bloodshed. It made national headlines that were sensationalized by the media in a way that portrayed the participants, and Appalachians as a whole, in the worst possible light.
This video has exclusive and extremely rare footage of the gravesite where six McCoy children: Tolbert, Pharmer, Alafair, Calvin, Randolph, Jr., and William are all buried. I have never seen these before in any of my research so this was quite a coup to pull off. The graves are located on property that can only be accessed by descendants of the family and, even then, only in rare circumstances.
