I was presented with a good opportunity to catch some good sounds from NS 5817, Idling on the siding in Leetsdale PA as she waited for her crew. That rebuilt Roots Blown EMD 16-645E3 sure sounds great.
A little back ground on 5817. She began life with Norfolk Southern railroad as an EMD GP-50, NO. 7026 with the original engine as a 16-645F3 Turbo Diesel and AR15 alternator. In August of 2005 NS 7026 was a part of the New rebuild program offered by Norfolk Southern. The engine was upgraded to the E series and was fitted with a Roots Blower for better induction. The cab was fitted with air conditioning and was upgraded with some newer equipment, however no microprocessor systems. Traction control systems have been upgraded as well. She bared the new number 5817, and is now an EMD GP38-3. So let’s enjoy the wonderful Idling sounds of a true example of engineering. Be sure to subscribe and hit like.
