E-mobility is increasing the demand for batteries by orders of magnitude. The measurement of the thickness of electrode foils is of utmost importance for the safety, lifetime and performance of these. Current market requirements are an absolute accuracy of (smaller than) 1 micron combined with a linear accuracy of ± 0.5 micron - measured on both wet and dry and thus black and porous graphite or cathode active material.
Thickness measurements were performed at various steps in pilot production lines, e.g., before and after coating, after drying, and after calendering. In addition, the effects of vibration, belt speed and film waviness on thickness measurement accuracy are analized and solutions are shown.
