The caisson carrying John Lewis pauses on Broad Street at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
The video is from my GoPro camera, mounted to a barricade in front of the ABC news crew at the northeast corner of Broad Street and Water Avenue. I didn't realize that the caisson would pause there.
Listen to the sounds. The clip-clop of the horses' hooves as the caisson approaches. The sweet song from across Broad Street. The commands to the State Trooper honor guard and saluting. The jingle of the harnesses and the driver saying softly, "Wait, wait, wait." People crying. Applause. People shouting, "We got it from here, sir." "Thank you." "Thank you, sir." Joyful shouts. "Whooo!" "God bless you, John Lewis." "We love you."
Thank you, sir.
It was a tribute much like the man it honored. Genuine. Honest. Humble. True. Without pretense. And ever so good.
