Shakshuka is a popular Middle Eastern dish with poached eggs in a rich tomato and bell pepper sauce infused with aromatic spices. Follow our step-by-step guide to create this delicious and easy-to-make recipe.
👩🏼🍳 THE PERFECT SHAKSHUKA:
1 hot pepper (Jalapeño or Serrano; remove white ribs to control heat)
5 garlic cloves, sliced thin
1.5 bell peppers, julienned (sweet peppers as red, orange, yellow)
1 onion, sliced
Parsley, handful chopped
Olive oil
Spice Mix: 2-3 Tbsp
Tomatoes, 32oz can (whole, cut, or crushed)
Salt & pepper
Eggs (5-6 for this quantity)
🔷 In a large pan, heat some olive oil and sauté the onion, garlic, and hot pepper.
🔷 After a few minutes, add the bell peppers and continue cooking until soft.
🔷 Add 2-3 Tbsp of the spice mix. If you're using your own, mix in a separate bowl: Dried Sliced Garlic, Cumin, Smoked Paprika, Cayenne, Salt, Coriander, and Chili Powder.
🔷 Mix for 1 minute, and add the tomatoes. (If using fresh tomatoes, blanch them in boiling water, peel them, and add them to the pan.)
🔷 Add Salt and pepper, and cook for 10-15 minutes. Taste your sauce before cooking, and adjust spices and salt as necessary.
🔷 When your sauce tastes delicious, make little dimples and break the eggs one at a time into it. We recommend breaking each in a bowl to avoid any unwanted shells.
🔷 Cook on low-medium heat with the lid on. About 8 min for runny eggs and 15 for fully cooked eggs. Feel free to open the lid and take a peek.
🔷 Garnish with chopped parsley, and serve with warm fresh bread.
