Every Friday afternoon we get the audio designers together and the 20+ of us spend an hour talking about game audio, knowledge sharing or presenting audio deep-dives.
Past topics include trailer breakdowns, music design, F1 engines in a video game, software deep-dives, productivity tools and topics like "the trailer-fication of game audio". That last one got talkative!
On one of our last meetings, I shared a magic audio-experimentations from a privately created experiment to redesign a sequence from Arcane. The Netflix show presents magic in a stunning and intricate way and there's plenty of visual detailing to play with textures, movement and processing. Having visuals (of this beautiful nature) helped guide the exploration of processing and experimentation.
The reworked audio and breakdown was presented to our group, and I hope that you will enjoy this greatly condensed version too (the full presentation was some 30 minutes long).
Shout-out to several people who've been an inspiration for this:
Michael Clarke for the very useful feedback on my initial weak blast and lacking electricals in the spell-cast - thanks bud!
@Jtols most generous when it comes to sharing of his creativity and designs on Twitter: [ Ссылка ] - champion of the long-form-plugin-chain!
Mike Niederquell for sharing this clip - [ Ссылка ] - really got my juices flowing and kicked off the creation of my own chain.
Katrine Amsler's brilliant storytelling in her wwise breakdown - [ Ссылка ] - what a template!
Nick von Kaenel's twitter share of the free effects used in the chain above - [ Ссылка ] - loads of gems!
Those free effects are what set of my chain, stacking them on recordings of styrofoam to process that recording into electrics.
Follow all of them on hashtag #gameaudio twitter for many more useful inspiration and sharing!
