Ely cathedral was well worth the visit, I took this quick video just to give people an idea of what it looks like and what is there, then I walked around properly and was there for 2 half hours. You have so much to see: galilee porch and main entrance / west tower / south west transept and stained glass museum / St. Catherine's Chapel / Priors doorway / Nave / South door / the octagon / North and South transepts / St. Dunstan's Chapel / Choir / presbytery / Bishop West's Chapel / St. Etheldrda's Chapel / Bishop Alcock's Chapel / St. Edmund's Chapel / St. George's Chapel and the Lady Chapel. It cost £14 per adult entry to the cathedral, £6 for the stained glass museum and £11 to walk up the tower. I think all this is a little expensive, considering a lot of cathedrals are free entry and donations, but it is a very impressive building and definitely worth visiting. I really enjoyed my time there.
The first Monastery at Ely was founded in 673. Galilee Porch was built 1212-15. After the central tower fell it was replaced by the Octagon tower 1322. The west tower was extended 1395. In 1644 Oliver Cromwell closed Ely cathedral for 16 years.
