Introduction:
Art is an essential activity in the early childhood classroom. Supporting the development of artistic skills and proclivities enhances the child’s motor skills, communication skills, confidence, and ability to perceive the visual environment. When children engage in artistic endeavors, the goal is to adhere to a process, not product mentality. By valuing the child’s attempts at their current level of expertise, the teacher will encourage the process, which will lead to future efforts.
Ample research supports the value of integrating art into all of the content areas as a tool for expressivity as well as a way to support the development of the physical skills of strength and dexterity.
