The Shuttleworth Collection is known for having a host of original old airworthy aircraft. After the main display when the winds are usually a lot calmer, the REALLY old aircraft emerge from the hangers. One of them, this English Electric Wren (yes, that's English Electric who went on to make the Lightning supersonic fighter aircraft!) was a show favourite at the Season Premiere yesterday.
This aircraft was built in 1923 and is powered by a 3 horsepower flat twin motorcycle engine. It was designed with encouragement of a £500 prize offered by the Duke of Sutherland to develop practical light aircraft for private ownership. Entrants had to build the most economical light single-seat aircraft. The Daily Mail also chipped with £1,000 in prize money for the longest flight by a motor-glider with an engine of not more than 750 cc. The Wren came joint first after covering 87.5 miles on one imperial gallon (4.5 litres) of fuel!
