In part one of Painting a Canvasback, "Ward style", I'll be demonstrating how I paint a 1936 Ward Canvasback. I love the look of the Ward Brothers Canvasback. It is not too complicated and the entire painting process could easily be done with all hand blending but I will use a little bit of airbrushing using the Badger SG100 just to tidy things up a bit. The carving is first sealed with Krylon Matte finish. I will be using Liquitex acrylic paints for finishing the bird but this is an excellent chance to get out the oil paints and use them instead. Please see my demonstration in Wildfowl Carving Magazine, Fall of 2014 and Winter of 2015, for an entire step by step instruction.
Painting: Priming, White Gesso, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow and Napthol Crimson.
Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue make my blacks, and White, Raw Umber and a hint of Raw Sienna make my Whites.
A little Ultramarine Blue into my White makes the secondaries color, and Burnt Sienna and a little Yellow Ochre makes head color.
By watching the video you will see how I mix the colors together.
Antique effect: Sand certain areas of the carving with sandpaper to expose the primer, then take some Paint Thinner and some Roof Patch to make a dirty wash to be brushed on the carving and then wiped off with some paper towels. Finally, after this dries, I spray on a fine coat of Krylon Matte finish. (This I did off camera).
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post. Thanks for Watching!
