As gas prices continue to surge across the US, several states have temporarily waived their gas tax to provide relief for drivers. Some lawmakers on Capitol Hill are pushing to make that idea a national priority, and governors in some states are offering their constituents free gas cars, like California Governor Gavin Newsom. Governor Newsom says, "$400 for each registered vehicle that an individual owns, up to two vehicles. That relief will address the issue that we all are struggling to address and that is gas prices, not only here in this state, but all across the country." Republicans don't think these ideas will help. Senator Mike Crapo says, "If you add more federal spending, even if its just some temporary relief in terms of a gas card or something, you are adding to the demand side of that supply and demand economy that we live in, and that will ultimately be higher inflation." Democratic Senator Mark Kelly thinks a federal gas tax holiday is the way to go. His bill would suspend the 18.4 cent per gallon federal gas tax until January 1, 2023, pass tax savings to Americans and not oil and gas companies monitored by the Treasury Department, and keep the highway trust fund solvent through fund transfers from the Treasury Department. Capitol Hill Correspondent, Erik Rosales reports.
