🍒 My cherry tree in this video is about 4-5 years old. And though it’s a dwarf, it’s producing a massive amount of fresh fruit. Rather than lose my harvest to the birds, deer, or insects, I’ve learned permaculture methods for keeping my cherries protected organically. No pesticides, nets, or chemicals—rather just a few management practices that make a world of difference.
GUILDS
In this specific guild I’ve used forsythia, comfrey, blueberries, Shasta daisies, and lemon balm. Find lots of guild recipes for your fruit trees in my book The Sustainable Homestead.

NUTRIENT SPRAYS
The timing schedules and spray recipes for fortifying your trees with immune-boosting nutrients can be found in Michael Phillips’ book The Holistic Orchard

STICKY TRAPS
I use Tanglefoot sticky coating every year to lure pesky insects. A great resource for timing and other trap ideas can be found on Stephan Sobkowiak’s YouTube channel, The Permaculture Orchard.

INVITE BIRDS
Birds love to feast on caterpillars and other moth larvae that infect fruit. By continuing to plant perennials and to hang birdhouses, local bird wildlife will move in and set up residence. They will help to keep your pest pressure in check.
