Ilulissat is situated in Disko Bay at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord which was included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. There are three designated hiking trails of varying duration and difficulty in the Illulisat Icefjord (Ilulissat Kangerlua) each providing fabulous opportunities to hike along the edge of the fjord and get stupendous views of a massive number of icebergs that have calved from the most active glacier in the world: Sermeq Kujalleq. We followed the blue route that takes you along a boardwalk past the old settlement of Semermuit and then follows the bare rocky coast above the fjord. We then joined the red route that took us back to the beginning of the boardwalk, which takes about a couple of hours. From here it's an easy 20 minutes walk back into the town, making this an ideal half day activity for those who have come into Ilulissat on a cruise ship.
