Biosphere 2 was a $200 Million Martian colony experiment aimed at simulating a self-sustaining human colony on Mars. In the 1990s, in the middle of the Arizona desert, 2 experiments were conducted to see if humans would be able to colonize Mars.
It was an ambitious experiment, and many believed it failed, however, there is likely much we can learn from the "Biospherians" who bravely participated in the Biosphere 2 experiments.
The construction of Biosphere 2 was started by Space Biospheres Ventures in 1987 and it was completed in 1991. The first experiment started on the morning of September 26, 1991 when a group of 8 people, 4 men and 4 women coined the “Biospherians”, were introduced into the biosphere. This experiment ended 2 years later on September 26 1993. During the course of the experiment, the health of the humans who lived in the biosphere remained relatively intact, however, food levels were low and the oxygen levels inside the biosphere dropped drastically. The biggest challenge that emerged during the experiment was dealing with human behavior. One of the biospherians would later say: “Just the fact that the same number of people came out as went in is a triumph”.
