Billionaire Patrice Motsepe Refuses Presidential Bid - Says corruption is sinking South Africa - In an eye-opening interview with France 24, which was monitored by The New Africa Channel, popular South African billionaire President Patrice Motsepe discussed South Africa's upcoming election, the challenges the country faces, and his vision for the future. Mr Motsepe, who is the current president of the Confederation of African Football and the brother-in-law of South Africa's ruling President Cyril Ramaphosa, made some pretty bold assertions in the interview. Motsepe revealed that in his opinion, corruption remains one of the biggest problems facing South Africa, before laying down some surefire ways to tackle the canker.
Indeed, as Patrice Motsepe pointed out, corruption in South Africa remains a persistent challenge, despite the country having a strong legal framework to combat it. Transparency International's 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index scores South Africa at 41, indicating continued public perception of widespread corruption. This hinders service delivery, economic growth, and trust in government. A very recent example of widespread corruption in South Africa is the case involving South Africa’s former speaker of parliament Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. She was accused of soliciting millions of rand in cash from a former military contractor during her previous tenure as defence minister. Media reports further alleged she received a wig on one occasion as part of the bribe. She denied wrongdoing but stepped down to focus on defending herself. The former speaker of parliament subsequently turned herself in to the authorities and has since been charged in court with 12 counts of corruption and one of money laundering.
