In May 2020, after regulators had voiced safety concerns for years, the Edenville Dam in Michigan failed, letting some 21 billion gallons of water drain from Wixom Lake in just an hour. When that water poured into Sanford Lake downstream, it was too much for the dam there to hold, and it too failed. The result was some of the worst flooding the region has ever seen.
