Hi everyone!
Part 2 of a morning walk from Fort Mason to the Palace of Fine Arts and across the Golden Gate Bridge. We're continuing through the Marina and the Palace of Fine Arts.
Some of you might recognize this from The Rock, the 1996 movie starring Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery. It's the location at the end of the car chase, when John Mason (Sean Connery) tries to start a conversation with his daughter Jade (Claire Forlani). They sit just outside the rotunda before being approached by Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) and the rest of the FBI agents.

The Palace of Fine Arts was originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. A number of structures were originally built for the exposition and were scheduled to be torn down afterwards, but the Palace garnered much attention and was preserved. For years afterwards, it served a number of important and unimportant functions, eventually falling into disrepair. The original structure was demolished in 1964, leaving only a steel skeleton. It was rebuilt ten years later into the concrete structure we see today.
