Beekeeping is an extremely sophisticated job. From the breeding of bees, making of bee hives, adjusting their positions in relation to flowering sources and good weather are just part and parcel of what a beekeeper has to keep a keen eye on. It is both a science and art, as not only one needs to have a good understanding of the ever-changing weather, he also needs to understand the art of handling the bees to ensure they are happy, healthy and productive.
In this video clip, Ross Gordon demonstrates the inside of a bee hive and what the bees do while in them.
During the demonstration, we had a pleasant surprise that the hives (a.k.a supers) were filling up very quickly with Manuka honey.
It showed that:
1) the worker bees were aggressively producing Manuka Honey for storage,
2) the Manuka trees were just flowering nicely in the vicinity,
3) the Queen Bee and everyone else in the supers were productive,
4) the weather was just right (not too cold, and not too wet) for the bees to fly to the manuka flowers to collect nectar.
The above was a perfect combination of factors that contributed to supers being filled up rapidly.
It is amazing how these little creatures work for the nature, themselves and human beings!
