South African Finance Minister Praveen Gordin has been summonsed to appear in court on fraud charges next month. They relate to the early retirement of the former deputy commissioner of the tax authority, Ivan Pillay. Gordin is accused of acting fraudulently by granting Pillay early retirement with full benefits, and then re-employing him. But Gordin says the summons are politically motivated. He's questioned why prosecutors have chosen to charge him just weeks before the delivery of the mid-term budget. However, prosecutors are adamant that they have a case.
