The 18th Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw just ended with Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu as first price winner. Garrick Ohlsson, price winner of 1970, in a recent interview flat-out said Chopin would hate the idea of it. But why? Does he mean Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu and others (including him self) is not reflective of Chopin's voice? Ohlsson seems to question that indeed, even before the competition started. But if even price winners believe Chopin wouldn't recognize his own music during the competition: why does it still bear his name?
