When Carla and Ann Marie planned their life together they chose an enterprise worthy of their bond – a small intimate farm with a high value product. They left their cosy jobs, spent years travelling and gathering experience on other farms then jumped in deep – buying property on the rolling granite country in Central Victoria. They started with a small group of pure Saanen and British Alpine goats, nurtured and bred them until they had a viable herd of milkers. They built a small cheese-making factory on site and took their products to market, organic and fully integrated.
In this fifth year of their investment their books are meant to balance, but drought has hit. Feed costs sky rocket, water is bought in, the kangaroo population that have found a refuge in their remnant bushland must be culled, and as for the young boy goatlings the farm can no longer carry them. The crisis rolls on unabated calling for measures to be taken, hard work and faith that the drought will break. In autumn it does and the new kids have green pasture to frolic in and their mums turn on a rich flow for the cheeses, and all rejoice.
