This is the first of four videos we will be looking at during our Week 1 workshop for our JCU ethics course. Have a look at the video, applying your ETHICAL mind and not just your LEGAL one.
In this case, the journalist has been told that he must give up a confidential source, in order to assist a criminal investigation.
What values, principles and purposes are at stake here, on EACH side of the ethical divide? What values, principles and purposes might suggest that the journalist should give up the source? What values, principles and purposes might suggest that the journalist should stay silent?
What happens when you apply the Ethics Centre's ethical questions to this scenario: What decision would you be happy to have headlining the news tomorrow? Are there any ethical non-negotiables at play? What action would make the world a better place? What if everyone leaked confidential information? What would each decision do to the character of the journalist?
