Make sure you are listening... Heel down and heel up are both valid ways to play your bass drum. Use both, use one or the other. Our bodies are built differently so we are all going to have different approaches to the drums.
If you feel comfortable playing heel up and your teacher or your Youtube drummer of choice does it... that's great! Play heel up. I had a teacher work it with me once back in college and it wasn't for me. I do not like lifting my entire leg just to play the drums. However, if you want to play heel down... do that. It is certainly possible to get plenty of sound while remaining relaxed.
It is almost the difference between traditional grip and matched. Or using 5as instead of 5bs. Its all preference. Learn some "rules" and some techniques and then make them your own. As long as you stay relaxed and don't hurt your self. There should never be any tension in any drumming that you do. that is the only rule that shouldn't be broken.
