🆘 Urgent Call for Action: Human Rights in West Papua! 🆘🌏
Vanuatu 🇻🇺 is raising a crucial alarm about the ongoing human rights crisis in the highlands of West Papua. The conflict in this region has resulted in the displacement of an estimated 76,819 people, according to the Human Rights Monitor's April 2024 report. The number of displaced people has only increased due to new displacements in Bibida and Paniai, in June, 2024.
Vanuatu's Recommendations:
1️⃣ Humanitarian Access: Allow access to West Papua for international humanitarian actors to provide much-needed aid to the IDPs and for independent actors to monitor the serious human rights situation faced by Indigenous Papuans.
2️⃣ UN Visit: Allow the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to undertake a visit to West Papua, as called for by the leaders of the Melanesian Spearhead Group and the Pacific Islands Forum.
3️⃣ Fundamental Rights: Ensure that the fundamental rights of IDPs are upheld and that they have access to essential services such as education, health care, adequate housing, food, water, and sanitation.
This is a critical moment for the international community to stand together and support the fundamental rights of the people in West Papua. Let's raise our voices and demand action!
