Dau, a series of films directed by Ilya Khrzhanovsky took over 900 non-actors to recreate a 1930s secret Soviet research facility called The Institute. The many "particpants" of the Dau project traveled through three decades together, ending up in the 1960s. The production was ripe with controversy, from casting notorious criminals, to a case being brought against the production due to to treatment of infants on set -- however, this was dropped and it was found adequate care was given, the use of orphans for the scene was still in question.
