"When You Were Young" is a song by American rock band The Killers. It was released on September 18, 2006 as the lead single from their second studio album, Sam's Town (2006). The song was written and produced by The Killers and co-produced by Flood and Alan Moulder. The song has proven to be one of The Killers' most successful singles, peaking at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as their only number one to date on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart. Only "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me" would stay longer on the chart and have more pop airplay. It is also their highest-charting single to date in the United Kingdom and Australia, peaking at number two and number 10 respectively.
The song, which is in the key of B major and written in common time, displays the band's move towards a more "heartland rock" style, as it is part of an album that was supposedly heavily influenced by the music of Bruce Springsteen. The song itself was reportedly influenced by Springsteen's "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road".[2] The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song, and the single's video, directed by Anthony Mandler, received a nomination in the category of Best Short Form Music Video.[3] The single was ranked number 69 on iTunes Top 100 Best Sellers: Songs of 2006. The song also made number 4 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2006.
"Starlight" is a song by English alternative rock band Muse from their fourth studio album Black Holes and Revelations (2006). It was released on 4 September 2006 in the United Kingdom as the second single from Black Holes and Revelations.[1] The lyric "Our hopes and expectations, black holes and revelations" gives the album its title.
The song peaked at number 13 on the UK Singles Chart.[2] It was also the second single released in the United States, reaching number two on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.[3] The song was first played live during the Radio 1's Big Weekend festival in summer 2006. "Starlight" was written by Muse lead vocalist Matt Bellamy and produced by Rich Costey. Bellamy commented that he first wrote the song on a boat in bad weather.[5] Bassist Chris Wolstenholme commented that it is "a love song about missing someone, friends, family, someone you love".[6]
According to the music sheet published at Musicnotes.com by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, "Starlight" is an alternative rock song. It is set in the time signature of common time and composed in a moderate tempo of 121.5 beats per minute with the bridge sped up to 122.5 beats per minute.[7][8] It is set in the key of B major with Bellamy's vocals ranging from the note of G♯3 to the note of B4.[8]
When the song is performed live, it is transposed a half step down to B flat major to accommodate Bellamy's deepening voice. It is noticeable during the band's performance at Reading Festival 2006 and during HAARP. The unusual drum beat of the song spells out the word "TITS" in morse code, though whether this was the band's intention or not is unknown
Muse are an English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. The band consists of Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals, keyboards) and Dominic Howard (drums, percussion).
Muse released their debut album, Showbiz, in 1999, showcasing Bellamy's falsetto and a melancholic alternative rock style. Their second album, Origin of Symmetry (2001), expanded their sound, incorporating wider instrumentation and romantic classical influences. It earned them mainstream European success and a reputation for energetic live performances. Their third album, Absolution (2003), saw further classical influences, with orchestra on tracks such as "Butterflies and Hurricanes", and brought American success with singles such as "Time is Running Out".
Muse's fourth album, Black Holes and Revelations (2006), incorporated electronic and pop elements, influenced by 1980s groups such as Depeche Mode, and produced successful singles such as "Supermassive Black Hole". The Resistance (2009) and The 2nd Law (2012) explored lyrical themes of government oppression and civil uprising and cemented Muse as one of the world's major stadium acts. Their seventh album, Drones (2015), was a concept album about drone warfare and returned to a harder rock sound.
Muse have won numerous awards, including five MTV Europe Music Awards, eight NME Awards, two Brit Awards, and two Grammy Awards, winning the Grammy awards for Best Rock Album for The Resistance and Drones. They have sold over 20 million albums worldwide
