On the night of July 13th 1916, a company of Otago Infantry was sent on a trench raid against German lines. This time, the Germans were ready for the NZ tactics and the raid turned into a bloodbath with almost all of the men either dead or wounded. For the rest of the night, many men went crawling through No Mans Land dragging back the dead and wounded. At the same time, my grandfather was badly injured in the shoulder from a gun shot wound... but he was in a non-combat role (NZ Field Bakery). Did he somehow get mixed up in this mess, perhaps as one of the volunteer stretcher bearers?
