Socrates was killed due to his conviction and sentencing by the state of Athens in 399 BCE. The charges against him were "corrupting the youth" and impiety, or disrespect for the gods of the state. Socrates' method of questioning, now known as the Socratic method, was seen as a threat to the established social and political order. His constant questioning and criticism of the values and institutions of Athens made him many enemies.
During his trial, Socrates refused to apologize or back down, instead defending his actions as divinely inspired and necessary for the pursuit of wisdom. The jury voted for his death, and he was sentenced to drink hemlock, a poisonous plant that would cause his death.
