Puto Maya
This kakanin is a Visayan breakfast or snack. This is very common in Cebu, Davao, Leyte and around Misamis Oriental. They also have different ways of cooking puto maya but the taste is still the same. It is made with glutinous rice, coconut milk, white sugar and ginger. Yes it has ginger, it gives the rice cake a very unique and distinctive taste.
To cook this kakanin you simply soak the glutinous rice in water and steamed this. Then wrap it with banana leaves and this is best served with sweet mango and sikwate. Sikwate is a dark chocolate drink made with tableya. Tableya is made from cacao beans.
Puto Maya ingredients:
4 cups glutinous rice
3-4 cups coconut milk
1-2 tbsp grated ginger(more if preferred)
1 cup white sugar
1/2 tsp salt
Additional:
Sweets mangoes
Sikwate
Banana leaves(for wrapping)
Sikwate:
1 cup milk
1 pc. tableya
1-2 tbsp brown sugar
