Raga Bairagi is said to be introduced by Pt. Ravi Shankar from the Carnatic Raga 'Rewati'. It is a very melodious raga and appropriate for devotional songs. This Raga is very simple in its framework and discipline so artists have full liberty to sing in all the three octaves.
The swars r S r M P n, ie Rishab and Nishad are komal swars while Gandhar and Dhaivat are absent or Varjit swars.
The chalan of the raga is similar to Bhairav, so it is also known as BAIRAGI BHAIRAV.
Chandrashekharji is presenting raga Raga Bairagi on the surbahar with an alap and jod.
The Surbahar is essentially a bass sitar. It is substantially larger and is tuned considerably lower than a sitar. The surbahar has an advantage over sitar in that it has a longer sustain and an ability to meend up to 6 notes in a single fret. This instrument is very well suited to long slow alaps.
Accompanying Chandrashekharji on the tanpura is Mrudula Katdare. Audio recordist is Shri. Shreyas Dandekar at Pamcham studios Pune. Video is edited by Dr. Sujata Bhat.
