Virtual conference: Prenatal and early life factors impacting behaviour and mental health
Keynote speaker: Catherine Lebel
How the prenatal environment shapes structural and functional brain development in children
Psychological distress (elevated anxiety and/or depression symptoms) is
common in pregnancy, affecting ~25% of individuals; this conveys risks for the pregnant
individual as well as a higher risk of behavioural problems and later mental health difficulties
for their children. Approximately 10% of women report consuming alcohol in pregnancy,
which can also have lasting effects on their children’s cognitive and behavioural
development. On the other hand, factors such as physical activity and social support can be
positive for pregnant individuals and may help protect their children. Understanding how
these factors influence brain development is critical for appropriately designing and targeting interventions.
