In 2022, a joint research expedition by the Mexican National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Association for Archaeological Research and Exploration uncovered evidence of a legendary subterranean labyrinth under the ruins of Mitla, believed by the ancient Zapotecs to be an entrance to the Underworld.
The project employed the latest non-invasive geophysical prospection methods, including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Seismic Noise Tomography to reveal a vast network of chambers and passages underneath the archaeological site.
In September of 2023, the same team will be conducting more scans to confirm the extent of the underground passageways by extending the research area to the remaining groups of structures in the South Group, Arroyo and Calvario Group.
