I have played and enjoyed many different rom hacks, from drayano games to rpg maker games to…meme games, but I do love a good nuzlocke. However, not all games are optimised for nuzlocking, some games are way too easy to the point of absolute boredom, while others are too hard to the point of being unfun RNG simulators. In todays tier list I will be ranking the difficulty of ALL ROM hacks I have played for nuzlocking, there's about 30 or so, the games I will be ranking are…if you watched this previous tier list made I made where I ranked them based on subjective quality, but I’ve played some new games since then which will also be added to this list…these include…
Pokemon Challenges garbage green
Pokemon insugence
ROWE, the open world game
And Run&Bun, the newest rom hack on the scene
DO note that this is just my opinion, you’re free to disagree as long as you don't get butthurt, also note that is a tier list solely ranking the difficulty of nuzlocking, NOT the overall quality of the game, also difficulty doesnt always equate to quality, remember that.
When ranking the games I will be assuming that the player will be using every quality of life hack possible without actually cheating the rules, so hacking in rare candies and legally obtainable evs are allowed, cause grinding doesnt equate to real difficulty in nuzlocking its just a time sink, I will be assuming that the use of set up moves will be very limited or outright banned in all of these games as lets be honest, they cheese every single game theyre in. I’m also not going to account for post game in these rankings tho I really do like to nuzlocke the whole game and not just the main story, there is a genuine argument that the elite 4 rematches should be included in the nuzlockes as in most games these events canonically happen and are part of the overarching story and gameplay progression, these do tend to add a lot of content and difficulty but I wont be accounting for this in this list with only one exception on this list where the game tells you to nuzlocke post game as part of its challenge.
Now for the tiers I split them into several categories, at the bottom we have autopilot tier, these are games equivalent to GEN 6, games that are almost impossible to lose if youre brain is turned on, like you can easily beat the whole run without losing any mons, or 2 max without even needing to prepare.
Then there’s easy games but can have slight difficulty spikes at some points or odd battles that will make you dodge a crit or two if your’e playing without using docs, Emerald is a good example of this, a modicum of brain power is needed.
Then we have challenging if blind tier, or mid, these are equivalent to the hardest vanilla games, yes you can definitely beat them blind but you might wipe a couple times and will have some genuinely challenging issues, but if you do plan thoroughly with docs you will easily win in a couple attempts.
Next is the challenging tier, meaning that we are now at the point where a blind run is no longer feasible, you will need to consult docs and damage calculations to beat these games, theyre pretty much mandatory and even then you still probably need at least a couple tries to beat these games. This is now the try hard territory.
Then we have the insanity tier, games that ARE the pinnacle of nuzlockable games, they ARE doable but massive commitment skill and game knowledge is required and there will always be elements of RNG in your runs, these are not for the faint of heart at all.
Finally we have the almost literally impossible tier list, meaning games that might actually be un-nuzlockable either due to wack balancing or weird mechanics, you’ll know what I mean when I discuss these games.
Ok so now that I’ve discussed my reasoning and criteria lets actually get into the tierlist rankings.
