(4 Nov 1999) English/Nat RUSSIA STILL IN LOVE WITH FUR
Story: Fendi Fur show
Date: November 2nd
Location: Moscow
If one thing could symbolise the ostentatious display of Russian 'nouveau riche' wealth, it has to be the fur coat. In the last few years it has become an essential part of the winter wardrobe for well-heeled Russian women seemingly immune from the effects of the country's current economic crisis.
Small wonder then that wife of the Russian minister for foreign affairs and other dignitaries were among the audience for the Italian fashion house FENDI's autumn winter 2000 fur collection on November 2nd..
Staged at the sumptuous Bolshoi Theatre, Russian models sashayed down the catwalk in an array of fur attire. Full length coats, cropped jackets, hats and footwear were all on display as part of a Russian -Italian commercial fashion week.
Enough to incur the wrath of many a pro animal rights campaigner in the West, Russian women have no such qualms about wearing fur.
'I love fur' says one rich moscovite. ' Especially now with new innovations such as fur changing colour and even shape as you wear it. It's a unique fabric.'
Another observer states: 'I can see there will be a 'humanitarian' aspect about fur in this country.' But with a fur coat still one of the best insulators against the bitterly cold Russian winters he adds; 'It's a struggle that will wage for some time to come.'
Fendi also see Russia as one of the most important outlets for fur fashion: A fashion house representative said: 'We believe in the future of Russia and consider that this market is very important for us.'
The battle to ban fur from the world's catwalks still has some way to go....
