Aalen is a historic city located in the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg. Situated on the Kocher River, it lies at the northern foothills of the Schwäbische Alb, about 30 miles (48 km) north of Ulm.
The city has a rich Roman heritage, having originated around a large Roman fort, much of which still stands today. Additionally, nearby are the remains of the Roman limes, a frontier wall. Aalen became a free imperial city in 1360, but was devastated by fire in 1634. It was later annexed by Württemberg in 1802.
Aalen boasts several notable landmarks, including the old city hall which dates back to 1636, and the church of Sankt Nikolaus, built in 1765. The Limesmuseum, which opened in 1964, houses an impressive collection of Roman relics.
The city is also home to various industries, including machinery, optics, textile, and paper. As a result, Aalen is an important communications center in the region.
In 1975, the neighboring city of Wasseralfingen was incorporated into Aalen, effectively increasing its size by nearly a third. Overall, Aalen is a picturesque city with a rich cultural heritage, making it a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts alike.
