During all these years recording at historic racing weekends, I've always been captivated by the magnificent Lola T70 Mk3B prototypes roaring on track with their loud Chevrolet V8s. And at least one or two of those 'B' versions are always present at any historic weekend. But if there's a Mk3B there should be also a ''Mk3A''. And these are slightly rarer than the others, or maybe I've only been less lucky to see them in all these years. In fact this video is composed by most of the scenes I recorded with a ''Mk3A'' from 2014 to 2020. Officially this version is only called T70 Mk3 Coupé (there isn't any 'A' after Mk3).

The T70 history started with the Mk1 and Mk2 Spyder Can-Am/Group 7 prototypes powered by Chevrolet V8 engines. These were very successful cars and Eric Broadley (Lola's founder and chief designer) saw an opportunity to homologate the Chevrolet engined machine for Group 4, which required a production minimum of 50 cars. A further requirement for Gr. 4 was the installation of a roof and a windscreen, which also involved designing a new body. The homologation was validated in 1967. The T70 was so offered in the form of a 2-in-1 race car, which could be raced as a Group 7 Spyder and a Group 4 Coupe, powered by the six litre version of the Chevrolet small-block V8. Unfortunately the Group 4 car wasn't very successful in Europe, since the Chevrolet powered coupes often suffered reliability issues due to the grade and type of fuel allowed compared to the one used in the States.

After a bad performance at Le Mans in 1967, Lola received more bad news as the sport's governing body announced that the 'Group 6' prototype class would be restricted to 3 litre and the 'Group 4' sportscar class to 5 litre. This pretty much rendered the T70 Coupe useless for 1968. Fortunately the T70 was allowed to be raced again into Group 4, under the condition that it ran with a five litre engine. But again in 1968 the successes of the T70 were restricted to sprint races, with the same issues on the Chevy engines happening during longer endurance competitions. In late 1968 Lola unveiled an updated version of the T70, the Mk3B.
