South Korea reported 1-thousand-20 new COVID-19 cases on Monday... surpassing the one-thousand-mark for the first time in three days.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on Monday that vaccination in the country could start as early as next month.
He said countries such as U.S. and Europe where vaccination has already begun are experiencing difficulties handling the vaccines... as some of the expired doses may have to be thrown away.
And that South Korea cannot let the same situation happen when it starts inoculation.
"Vaccine plans should be ready by the end of this month, which means by January 31st."
Of the Monday's locally transmitted cases, more than 70 percent came from the greater Seoul area.
This is largely due to a mass outbreak at the Dongbu Detention Center in Seoul... with more than 1,000 cases linked to the outbreak.
Another mass cluster infection has also been seen at a nursing home in Gwangju City as well, with 65 people testing positive in just two days.
"Recent cluster infections at nursing homes and correctional facilities were mainly because they were crowded and enclosed indoor spaces."
He added ventilation is important in preventing the spread of the virus in these kinds of facilities... as it is becoming more difficult to open windows with the freezing cold weather throughout this week.
There were 19 new deaths on Monday... raising the death toll to 981.
