This J35 has several features that make exact dating difficult, but we do our best to get the facts straight! The spruce top and mahogany back and sides made the J35 a direct competitor to the Martin D18, with the back and sides housing a non-scalloped X-Bracing with three non-scalloped tone bars. On the outside, a single binding adorns both the front and back of a body. The guitar is also equipped with a V-shaped mahogany neck without elaborate decoration, only the simple dot inlay lets you know where you are on the rosewood fingerboard.
It is striking that this J35 once had a pickup near the bridge. A new inlaid piece of wood on the top is the silent witness to this, just like where the volume knob once was. Finally, on the side of the body on the bottom curve, the place where the output jack was installed has been filled with a piece of mahogany. The repairs on the top have been painted over with probably shellac, just like the playwear around the pickguard and the rosette. Furthermore, some cracks have been repaired on the top.
