Elamite Empire (circa 3400–539 BCE): One of the earliest civilizations in the region, centered in what is now southwestern Iran. Known for its advancements in writing, art, and architecture.
Median Empire (728–550 BCE): The Medes were an Iranian people who established an empire in northwestern Iran. They were eventually conquered by Cyrus the Great of Persia.
Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BCE): Founded by Cyrus the Great, it became the largest empire in ancient history, stretching from Egypt to the Indus River. Renowned for its administrative efficiency, infrastructure, and the Royal Road. Conquered by Alexander the Great in 330 BCE.
Seleucid Empire (312–63 BCE): Following Alexander's conquest, Iran came under the rule of the Seleucids, one of the successor states to Alexander's empire. Significant Hellenistic influence during this period.
Parthian Empire (247 BCE–224 CE): A major Iranian political and cultural power in ancient Iran. Known for its military prowess and resistance against the Roman Empire.
Sassanian Empire (224–651 CE): Re-established Iranian rule over much of the Iranian plateau and surrounding regions. Known for its achievements in art, architecture, and Zoroastrianism. Fell to the Arab Muslim conquest in the mid-7th century.
Islamic Caliphates (651–1501 CE): Following the Arab conquest, Iran came under the rule of various Islamic dynasties, including the Umayyads, Abbasids, and Seljuks. Persian culture and language continued to thrive despite Arabization.
Safavid Empire (1501–1736 CE): Established Shia Islam as the state religion. Known for its conflict with the neighboring Ottoman Empire and its cultural achievements.
Afsharid Dynasty (1736–1796 CE): Founded by Nader Shah, who briefly restored Iranian unity and conquered large swathes of territory.
Zand Dynasty (1751–1794 CE): Established by Karim Khan, who briefly united Iran after Nader Shah's death.
