This hyper-realistic beach diorama was created for Ocean Recovery Project to highlight the tragedy of plastic pollution in our oceans.
Ocean Recovery Project works with Keep Britain Tidy's BeachCare initiative, collecting marine plastic and sending it off to be recycling into kayaks made by Odyssey Innovation among other things.
Plastic plays an important part in our lives - and in diorama-building - but we must all be plastic-smart. This is why I always clean out my plastic cups so that I can use them again. Give them a spray with isopropyl alcohol and wipe them clean with a reusable rag. I also reuse old yoghurt pots for resin and paint. There will always be a level of hypocrisy, and the irony of me using plastic cups and epoxy resin to create a diorama about plastic pollution is not lost on me, but this diorama is a permanent work of art for display at events.
I haven't provided a voiceover for this video or written any text on screen. It's meant to be purely an experience of the build.
The water effect I used was created with clear polymer caulking mixed to various consistencies with isopropyl alcohol. I had previously employed this material mixed with white spirit, but after watching the fab Luke's APS's video on water effects, I tried iso and I have to say he was spot on. It works a treat. Cheers, Luke!

The sand is clay dust and grout. The rock is from a Woodland Scenics rock mould. And of course there is lots of Sculptamold and the Sculpting Tool by Hot Wire Foam Factory.
Many of the materials and tools I use come with safety instructions. Please always read and follow these rather than simply copy what you see me or other people doing.
