Math and reading scores for 13-year-olds in the United States have hit their lowest levels in decades, according to a new report from the National Center for Education Statistics. The National Assessment of Educational Progress long-term trend assessments show the average reading score for 13-year-olds dropped four points between the 2019-20 school year and the 2022-23 school year, while it fell 9 points in that same timeframe for math. It represents the largest decline in math ever recorded by the NEAP in its 50 years of long-term trend math assessments, showing no signs of academic recovery after disruptions during the pandemic.
