The idea behind Terminal Mode is simple: To let users take their favorite mobile applications on the road.
Terminal Mode replicates the smartphone screen on the car's infotainment system, allowing steering wheel buttons, touchscreens, and other in-car inputs to control the phone. As a result, car infotainment systems can, without software updates, access new mobile phone applications as they become available.
The specification is still in development, but key features include provisions for minimizing driver distraction. For instance, unsafe apps can be locked out while driving. Also, apps can automatically alter their HMIs to simplify driver interaction.
Terminal Mode uses a superset of the VNC protocol to duplicate the mobile device screen on the car's head unit through a WiFi or Bluetooth link. As a result, users can access the various features of their mobile device through the car's controls or touchscreen.
Terminal mode isn't tied to any specific carrier or smartphone, so it's quickly becoming available in a variety of mobile devices.
This week, at the SAE Convergence conference, QNX Software Systems is demonstrating a preliminary implementation of Terminal Mode technology in a specially modified Chevrolet Corvette. Booth #717.
