1) What are you doing and where are you from?
I am 18 years old and I am from Brazil. Right now I am applying for American universities. The TOEFL is required for most universities.
2) What was your test center experience like?
It was very normal I would say. Everyone was wearing masks and there was social distancing. I did not have any troubles with computers and stuff, everyone was super prepared, they were very helpful, so it was really cool.
3) How did you prepare to get a high TOEFL score?
I studied for about a month and I did a lot of practice tests. I practiced almost every day. I practiced the sections with which I had more difficulties more often.
4) Was there a task on the TOEFL that you found hard?
For me it was TOEFL Writing and Speaking. TOEFL Writing ended up being harder than Speaking because I got an extended version of the test in Reading and Listening so I was kind of tired when I got to the writing section. I feel that that took a couple of points off. In TOEFL Speaking I was nervous because there is so little time
5) How did you prepare for TOEFL Speaking?
I knew that I was more insecure about TOEFL Speaking, so I focused on that a lot. The Speaking templates are amazing because they give you a direction how you should respond. I did not memorize everything but I studied and so I got an idea of what the structure of my answer should be like and this really helped me. I practiced so much for the Speaking section, soo that it was so natural on test day.
6) How did you manage to concentrate during TOEFL Speaking?
I knew that we would have to wear a mask and I did not practice at home using the mask. I think I should have done that. I feel that if I had practiced with the mask on, I would have felt more confident on test day. In the test center you have to wear a mask and headphones and that was really bad for me because I could not hear my voice. Although everyone was talking at the same time, I took my headphones off when I was speaking so that I could hear my voice. The fact that I could hear my voice really helped to feel more in control of the TOEFL Speaking section.
7) Which TOEFL task was the easiest for you?
TOEFL Listening. I am very used to listening to English and answering questions, so it was very natural for me. When I started practicing for TOEFL Listening I did not know that we were allowed to take notes, so I did the first practice test without taking notes. So I would literally remember everything and I trained my brain to remember a lot of things. I took my first practice test and then I found out that I could take notes. That really helped me a lot.
8) Did you have a special note-taking strategy for TOEFL Listening?
Not really. When you practice several times you get a feeling for what they are asking for. At the beginning I took a lot of notes until I realized ‘Oh, they are not going to ask this’. I feel like that is the key for the TOEFL. The TOEFL practice test is so similar to the TOEFL. It is going to be the same thing in the real test.
9) Did you have a special note-taking strategy in TOEFL Listening?
I was very anxious, especially because I was insecure about TOEFL Speaking. But I felt relieved and I was happy because I felt that I had performed well.
