Morbio Superiore (452 m above sea level) lies at the entrance into the Valle di Muggio, which is traversed by the river Breggia. This Ticino village, together with the formerly independent municipalities of Bruzella, Cabbio, Caneggio, Muggio, and Sagno, forms the municipality of Breggia in the sub-district of Caneggio (district of Mendrisio). The historic village center is characterized by old Ticino town houses and farmyards and the two churches San Giovanni and Chiesa Sant'Anna with popular late-Baroque frescos. A geological excavation site with fossil finds and excavated layers of earth is situated in the area of Morbio Superiore and is also accessible for visitors.
Individual parts of the area are a protected area called Parco delle Gole della Breggia (park of the Breggia gorges). Geological characteristics made it Switzerland's first «Geopark». A natural cross section developed along the course of the river. The water exposed a geologic profile extending with almost no interruptions from the Jurassic to the Tertiary (more than 80 million years) with traces from the old oceans. The perfect starting point to visit and explore the gorges is the old Mill of Ghitello (1606), located at the Centro Breggia in Balerna.
