Fisher Investments’ founder, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer Ken Fisher describes how investor sentiment typically evolves throughout a market cycle. Drawing from Sir John Templeton’s classic line that “bull markets are born on pessimism, rise on skepticism, mature on optimism and die on euphoria” Ken explains why the current bull market still has room for growth.
This new bull market started last fall amid concerns tied to Fed rate hikes, the potential of a recession, high inflation and other factors. Ken refers to the “pessimism of disbelief”—the notion that pessimistic investors will cling to negative information—as a bullish feature. According to Ken, while investor sentiment may be warming as stocks continue to rally, sentiment is still largely planted in skepticism—signaling there’s more upside ahead for stocks.
